President Barack Obama will visit Pittsburgh in October for a conference that will explore science, technology and innovation, jointly hosted by Pitt, Carnegie Mellon University and the White House.
The White House Frontiers Conference, on Oct. 13, will look at the future of healthcare, energy, data and space, topics that will also appear in the November issue of WIRED, a magazine focused on trendy technology and it’s impact. President Obama will guest edit that issue, which will also follow the theme of “Frontiers,” according to an article on the publication’s website.
The conference comes at a time when both Pitt and CMU have made marked efforts in the “frontier” fields, including Pitt’s open data partnership with the city of Pittsburgh and the Pitt, CMU and UPMC joint venture to explore big data in health care last year.
Pittsburgh, too, was recently a finalist in the Department of Transportation’s Smart City Challenge, a program that sought to marry technology and city planning.
The conference will focus on five “frontiers,” including health care innovation and precision medicine, investments in open data, harnessing the potential of artificial intelligence, accelerating the clean energy revolution and space exploration. In addition, innovators at the conference will discuss the importance of collaboration across sectors, job creation and equity.
Details about where and what days and times the conference will be held were not released Tuesday morning.
“We at Pitt are very pleased to partner with Carnegie Mellon to host the White House Frontiers Conference in Pittsburgh, a city developing a reputation as an innovation hub,” Chancellor Patrick Gallagher said in a release announcing the conference and Obama’s visit. “This is a welcomed opportunity to bring notice to the city and its commitment to the importance of supporting research and development, and to further the message of the need for continued support of science at a national level.”
